In my first Columbia law school class, the chattering of smart fingers typing on laptops was like a swarm of locusts. Standard lecture hall style. Professor looks, and talks, exactly like Alan Alda in GlenGary Glen Ross.

The next class, a seminar in a small room with 15 people around a circular table, is deadly still. Everybody sits like statues with laptops open and listens to the professor but takes almost no notes for some strange reason. To avoid drawing attention to myself, I learn to type ninja-style, softly, 100% silent, and rather than use the button to click I tap the slide pad which doesn't make a sound.

Seattle is so progressive, especially in the realm of social economics.
I understand that your first impulse may be to think this is a hoax, and the second may be a conflicting set of emotions. But, if you've worked in the dotcom world, stop lying, your second thought was, "I've thought of this years ago.", and your third thought was "I wonder if this is a Google labs project."

Very dramatic entry to the new apartment....I stayed in Brooklyn last night, finally walking in to my place on the Upper West Side at 6:30ish..to flashes of lightening and thunder! It is 78 degrees outside right now, and before the rain started the humidity was 80%. What the hell, is this the jungle?

It is 96 degrees and humid...and it's cloudy, the sun isn't even out.

I'm in the Tea Lounge in Park Slope, Brooklyn...it's kind of like a Victrola or
Bauhaus type of place. It is air-conditioned with free wireless, and
therefore, it looks like a refugee camp scene from War of the Worlds. There
are people just sitting on the ground, hugging their laptops. Nobody dares get
up to use the bathroom or they will lose their spot. People enter, but nobody
leaves, so it overflows now like a bathtub. I'm in the back, and I estimate it
will take me a half hour to get out of here without stepping on anybody.

Here's a new one I hadn't seen yet....lots of people are sharing their iTunes
library on the network. I'm listening to Tribe Called Quest (Scenario) from
somebody in this room named jameson mccalum, who I will probably never meet.

My Sidekick has developed a great tic - it keeps turning itself off and on
spontaneously. Four times in a row in the cab, then it chilled out for a few
hours, now just every five minutes. So for now, I'm purely Internet.

I've made it through a very educational moving experience. I signed up with a small moving company via the Internet and nearly lost all my belongings as a result because the shipping company is going bankrupt. There was a web of sub-contractors involved, and when one critical piece of the supply chain breaks down, nobody will help you recover your belongings.

I had to rent a U-Haul myself, drive to a storage facility and hour outside of Seattle, load my things into the U-Haul, then take the U-Haul to a reputable company's shipping facility and unload my things and assist in checking them in (otherwise, I'd have needed to wait two weeks to even get my things on a truck due to this being peak shipping time). I even got to weigh the truck myself. Heh.

I wonder if anybody reads this thing. I wonder how many times that has been written in other blogs.

Finally, after the waves of satellite/aerial photo search engine advances, Amazon gets street level! I've been talking about this for years...I wanted to make a map of manhattan where you could zoom in and see a picture of every intersection. I once calculated it would take one person three years working full time to do this on foot with a digital camera.
